  1. Hi, I recently started watching Community, and I REALLY REALLY LOVE YOUR COMMUNITY EPISODE REVIEWS!! I think they made me understand the characters so much more and know the show on a deeper level. I was wondering could you do a character analysis of Dean Pelton? He is such a complex character and in your episode reviews, you don't really address the dean much, and I would really love to understand the dean more.

    1. Hi Shimeng! Thank you so much for reading and enjoying these episode reviews. It means a lot that you would take the time to write feedback and suggestion.

I would love to do a character analysis of Dean Pelton and that's a great suggestion! It's definitely now on my docket. :)

  2. So far I've read 3 of your New Girl reviews. Nerd, Double Date, and I just went back into the archive and read your "Explorations of Romantic Chemistry" from March. And I can't say this enough. You really put your own spin on these reviews. You are clearly a fan, but it's such smart writing. I don't always see that in a typical fan review. And also, a typical reviewer/tv critic doesn't always take the time to really dig deep into characters. I love that. In my second semester College English class that I took years ago, we got to read a book and analyze and dissect the story. That was the most fun I've ever had writing. So here, as a reader of your blog, we get the best of many sides, and it takes on this positive, yet neutral unbiased view. Anyway, you must be a pro pen-woman or taken 10 times as many English courses as me. It's just a delight to read your work. Also, I'm curious. What is your biggest literary inspiration?

    1. Emily: Thank you SO much for your kind words and thoughtful response! I truly appreciate that. I started this blog as a place to review "Community" episodes. Like you said, I really do like to dig in-depth and watching that series allowed me to really focus on analyzing characterization and arcs. I thoroughly LOVE doing this kind of stuff. Sometimes I worry that I over-analyze but I can't help it. ;)

Aww, college classes played a HUGE role in my current writing process. I was a Creative Writing major so I spent four years being taught how to analyze metaphors and themes, etc. That's awesome that you enjoyed those classes, too.

I have a few literary inspirations. I was inspired and encouraged by one of my professors, David Athey, in college. He taught me so much about being a great reader and writer of literature. I'll always be inspired by the classics in both prose and poetry (Shakespeare, Austen, Dickinson, etc.) And I'm also inspired by reading interviews and listening to podcasts with creators about their writing processes (Dan Harmon, Liz Meriwether, Mike Schur, etc.)

Thank you again SO much for not only taking the time to read but by saying such nice things about this blog, too! :')

  6. Hello :),
i am from Germany and in advance i want to say sorry, if i make some mistakes in my text. I am a really big New Girl Fan and i want you to say, that your reviews are sooo good and interesting. When i saw an Episode (for example "Mars Landing") i didn't understand the break-up. Jess and Nick are my OTP and the Episode was so sad for me. i thougt they don't love eachother anymore.. it broke my heart.. I think when you are a fan of an TV-Serie and you have that favourite couple it is very hard to understand why there is a break-up, even when the directors had to break them up, because thats the Story of these kind of serie. When i read your Review to the Episode Mars Landing i understand why they break-up and that they love eachother more than anybody else.. but in this moment they are too different and too "young" to work for it.. They have to find themselves, isn't it so?

    I Have a Question :)
Do you think Nick and Jess are getting back together in Season 4?

    Thanks in advance,
    Aylin from Germany

    1. Just on more question..
Unfortunately, the fourth season of new girl is not running with us in Germany yet...
But when i read your perfekt reviews, there is one thing i dont understand..
Nick and Jess love eachother more than anything oder anybody.. but it seems that there is no love between them in the new season...

Can you tell me something about it?
      Thank you

    2. Thank you so much for reading the New Girl reviews, Aylin! I'm super impressed that I have readers in other countries who are checking them out. My "Mars Landing" review is one of my favorite ones I've done in recent years, and I'm so glad you were able to see the break-up in a new way after reading!

I'm not sure how the New Girl season four will go, so I can't speculate on whether or not they'll get back together. I'm going to probably say that it's unlikely this year unless something happens toward the end of the season. I'm content to see them be friends until then. But you're right -- they haven't interacted that much in season four, except for the premiere. There's a sweet scene between them that made me happy. I think the show is trying to make sure that not every episode is about them this year and they're going to try to focus a lot on the group as a whole, while still telling Nick and Jess's story, on the side more, if that makes sense?

Again thank you for reading these and for taking the time to comment! I hope you have a great day. :)

  7. I have to thank YOU! Your way to write is soo special and adorable and i love it when people put so much heart in something, with me you have one more fan! Please dont stop to wirte us such amazing texts.

Yes that makes sense, its just like robin and ted.. The whole story was about them even when the story was about finding THE mom.
I think in series its normal that the OTP is an will they or wont they thing

In germany the fourth season of new girl starts in 2015 :( so i will read your reviews, because i cant wait :D

Yes this little scene shows us that there is so much love between them but in this moment an relationship doesnt work because their future-thinking is too different, isnt it so?

Do you think that they still love eachother in season four?
I dont understand the real reason for their breakup? Can u explain me the reason with your words?

I think it can be very interesting with an jelous nick and an jelous jess :D

And i dont think that the directors will break our hearts twice, because in my opinion every new girl fan want them together, they are perfect!!

So many good wishes from germany :) yours Aylin

    1. Hello sweet Aylin!

I promise that I'll never stop writing about New Girl (at least not anytime soon) and definitely will keep writing about my favorite television shows for a long time.

As for Nick and Jess, do I think that they love each other in season four? Yes. I do think that they do. And I think that no matter what happens, whether they get back together or not (and I do hope they will sometime down the road), they will ALWAYS love each other. It looks like season four is going to focus on re-building their friendship and the friendships with everyone in the loft (and Cece) as well. Let me see if I can quote what I said in my Mars Landing review to explain why they broke up:

It really boiled down to the question: "Is loving each other enough?" Nick and Jess realized they could continue in their relationship even though they had very different views on life and their futures because they loved each other or they could be bold and break up BECAUSE they loved each other but realized it wasn't working. That second option is scarier but it's more honest -- it's scary because they don't want to break up but know that they need to or else they'll just keep existing in their relationship, not really growing, and they'll keep fighting and pretending everything is okay.

(The break-up is still very heart-breaking and sad, but I've found that looking at it this way makes a lot of sense.)

Thanks again for taking the time to comment! :)

    2. Hello :-)

Maybe i start watching your other favourite TV shows, just because you made them so interesting. You give your own spice in post (i hope you understand what i mean :D) and that is soo lovely. I am so happy, that i found your Site while surfing in the internet. And another important reason why i will keep reading your posts is that i can improve my englisch! Since i finished my school, there is so possibility to speak oder write in englisch.. and in my opinion it is a very important language.

yes, of course, that make sense. Now i understand it :) thank you.
I hope they grown up in season 4. For me and i think for all the others, they are perfect for eachother.. Today i saw a trailer of Season 4 Episode 4.. and it seems, like there is the feeling of Season 1 and 2 - more about the friendship and so on.

i would like to add, that i love "jenn's pick's" and "character appreciation posts".. can u do a pick of Cece and Jess?

And can you write an character appreciation about Jess, Nick OR Schmidt? :)

      Thank YOU - A LOT!!

      Best Regards Aylin :)

    3. Hey Jenn,
I have to ask you some questions about new girl, that I can’t get out of my mind or rather I have to discuss things on season 4.
Let’s start, I am very emotional and put always to much heart and to many thoughts in something and I have to ask you, because you can explain difficult things in an easy way, like you’re doing in your amazing reviews.
So I hope I don’t pester you with my questions and discuss-stuff. :D

When I start watching New Girl, I start liking the idea of Nick and Jess being together, since the pilot there was these tension and every scene with them was amazing, lovely and just fun.
From episode to episode, nick and jess fell more in love together or I would say, they had more feelings than friendship-feelings for each other. Especially the final of season 1 was the proof, that they can never be without each other, they help each other, and care for each other. And when Jess says, that she will be okay, because she met Nick.. oh my gosh, there was so much love in this scene. Then season 2, there was in any case more flirty tension between them, for example in Parking Spot, Cooler or Quick Hardening Caulk, but also in the earlier episodes, like Re-Launch or Halloween. And it is always lovely to see, how much Nick cares about Jess. They are made for each other, in my opinion.

Then season 3 - I liked them being together as a couple and a dream for my ness-heart came true - till “Mars Landing”, I always known, that this time will come, when the producers break them up. And I understand the break-up. For a few days I read your review about Mars Landing again and after that, I watched this episode again and difficult things came clear for me, which were not clear before, but I can’t handle so good with it. How can it be, that they can’t build a Toy together, but in season 2 - Table 34, they have tinkered a stable table. That isn’t realistic in my opinion. What do you think about that?
Just like episode - I think it’s the episode Sister III, they always lived together and always slept by each other, how can it be, that Jess don’t know, that Nicks feet are so dirty or that he wears a nightgown, or that Jess never read in Nicks bed. That is all not really realistic for me. I hope you understand what I mean. :D
And then the episode Big News, oh my gosh it was so sad at the end but also hearted, it was the proof, that they would do everything for each other, no matter what happened.

But that all makes me mad, because now after the break up, it’s like they never had that amazing friend or relationship and there are no lovely moment’s, that makes me sad and I don’t understand that. I understand that they want the group focussed on being single, because it’s fun and it works, but I am sad. I want Nick and Jess being together.. and now with Ryan and Kai I don’t think, that there will be this special tension between them in season 4.

I hope you can explain your opinion to me.

      Till then, enjoy your weekend.

      Lovely greetings from Germany,

      Yours Aylin :)))

    4. Hello there, sweet Aylin! Let's see if I can answer some of thre questions that you asked:

      - First of all, you quoted one of my favorite scenes ever from "See Ya," where Jess tells Nick she'll be okay because she met him. I mean, romantic right? The first season was all about establishing a friendship, the second (as you said) was all about establishing and expanding on the romantic tension they had, and season three was all about their relationship.

So, you asked particularly about how they could build a table together in "Table 34" but not a toy together in "Mars Landing." It's a great question, but you have to remember that Nick and Jess ACCIDENTALLY built a table. They were arguing the whole time they did it and then they somehow managed to create a solid table. I think Nick and Jess were always opposites and they'll always be opposites. It's ironic because it's why they work so well together (as you note in that episode), but also why, in "Mars Landing," they realize they DON'T work so well together. Both of them will never be able to change their personalities, nor would they want to, and that's the realization they came to in that episode.

If season one was about establishing a friendship between these two, then season four is about re-establishing that. In "LAXmas," especially, you see how much Nick cares about Jess and her happiness. It's that foundation that their relationship was built on, you know? I wouldn't give up hope for Nick/Jess just yet. Maybe not this season, but I like that they still really care about each other and protect each other.

I hope that makes sense! :)

  9. Hi, Jenn! I’d like to wish you Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I’m a senior (I’m also male, for whatever that’s worth…my hunch is that most of the posters here are of the opposite gender) at the University of Cincinnati who has a good amount of experience in electronic media, and who happens to be a fan of Community. This winter break, I’ve been able to finish a side project of mine that I’d been working on for a little while, called “We Could Be Friends: an Annie-Jeff Love Story”. I posted it to YouTube this morning, and here’s the link (I’d recommend watching in HD and using headphones/earbuds for the best experience):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWHV7B9JaEk

How does this relate to you? Well, besides re-watching all of Community, one thing that I did to make sure I had the best moments of Annie-Jeff was to search online for a list of them, and lo and behold, your “Top 15 Jeff/Annie Moments” article was one of the first results. I used it as a handy reference, and was able to include 14 of the 15 (the lone exception being #14), including a few that I had missed in my re-watch. So this video could not have entirely been done without you, especially some of the most inspirational parts!

Here are a handful of notable things from this video:

-“We have several interest in common…” including each other, of course!

-When Jeff is holding Annie’s chin, you can see her take in a deep breath! I’d bet that her heart is racing.

-As you can probably tell, I intended to match up the “we compare our hearts to things that FLY, but cannot LAND” lyrics with their kiss at the end of Season 1. It fits perfectly, and this was actually the clincher for why I chose this specific song, one of the more underrated songs by the Freelance Whales.

-After Jeff has tackled Annie, you can see that she is subtly moving her hand across his shoulder! Alison Brie is a ridiculously good actress.

-When Shirley is telling Annie that “sometimes a woman meets a man that she just can’t shake from her system no matter how much she knows better,” you can see that Annie’s eyebrow raises, and Jeff is listening in and is in deep thought. I’m inclined to believe they were subconsciously thinking about each other!

-I took the ending audio from what Jeff said to Rich at the end of the Season 2 episode "Asian Population Studies". But Dan Harmon obviously intended us to believe that Jeff is dramatically running off in the rain to Annie and saying it at her doorstep (before Rich is actually revealed), so I wanted to do it justice. Even though Jeff says that stuff about Rich, he certainly could be thinking the same about Annie.

-It cracked me up to use Annie flailing on the floor and saying "blee-bloo-bla…” as the “strangest” part of the ending!

-The reason why I included Annie letting her hair down as the "genuine" part of the ending is because, as you mentioned in your list, Jeff is watching her face, and only after does he raise his eyes to her hair. He’s observing her genuine nature! Thanks again for your observant list – I would have never caught this without it.

I hope you enjoy this and that it gets you ready for Season 6! I’d like to ask you: is there any way that this video can get posted on the front page of your blog? I doubt it will get many views without being posted on active Annie-Jeff fansites like this one, which are few and far between on the internet. Thanks for considering and enjoy the rest of your holiday!

  11. Hey,
I really like your reviews, especially the arrow and flash reviews.
I'm from Germany, and tonight the episode "Flash vs. Arrow" was aired in the german translation. I watched it before in english, so I noticed something in the end, after Oliver meets Baby Mother. In the original version she says "Hello Sweetheart" to her child, but they translateted it to a "Hallo, meine Süße" in german. It means the child is a girl. But I don't know if this is some kind of translation accident. Or perhaps the german translators know a little bit more than everyone else.

It's likely a translation accident since they gave no indication as to whether or not the child was a boy or a girl, but hey, maybe the translators are wishful thinkers. ;)

  13. Hi! Massive fan of your reviews for quite a few years now, mostly for your very clever writing and interpretation of themes, but also how you're not afraid to go all fan-girly ;) Remaining partial is all well and good but it's great to see a bit of passion! Also love how your reviews are always so positive. I do read things like Den of Geek but sometimes if the show's not having such a good run they can be sooo negative and angry, and there's nothing worse than coming from an episode I loved only to read everything that was supposedly terrible about it. So thank you for always writing positively about shows even if they have a dodgy episode or two! Anyway, ramble over, I was just wondering if you'd ever heard of/considered watching/seen a little show called Downton Abbey? I just really think you'd enjoy it, maybe just for your own enjoyment if not to talk about on here. I realise it's quite an old show now, especially now it's coming into it's last season, but it is honestly the only show that still gets my heart racing almost every episode. I know a lot of people write it off because period dramas aren't their thing - I know I certainly did - but I have yet to meet a person who has seen more than one episode and not become completely addicted, for its humour and the wealth of wonderful complex characters.
Phew! Sorry for the super long comment, thank you for writing and I hope you get a chance to check out Downton!

    1. Hi there Becca! First off, thank you SO much for your compliments. I'm so honored that you've been a fan of ours for a while now and that you enjoy how we balance clever writing and fangirling. We love to hear things like that! We also try to stay positive here (or snarky, if we're being critical) because, as you said, there are SO many places for negative reviews online. But we want to try and focus on being critical while loving.

Funny you should mention Downton Abbey: one of our writers, Hope, will actually be covering the final season's reviews for us. :) I admittedly only watched the show until the Christmas special where Matthew and Mary got engaged. After that, Downton just fell off my radar and priorities list. But lucky for you, someone else here will be invested.

Thanks again for your comments. :)

  14. Hi, I love reading your reviews, you're so intuitive and funny. I have The Flash related question. What is your opinion about Barry's and Caitlin's relationship this year? It's like they hit the brake. Their friendship was beautifully portrayed last year and now it looks like they're just two people in the same place, at the same time. Maybe it's just me, but it seems off somehow. Grant and Danielle have a great chemistry together and I would like to see their friendship evolving, not stagnating. Maybe there were too many mixed signals last year and they want to slow it down. Anyway, I would like to see them interacting more. Thanks.
